Niantic Inc., the creator of Pokémon Go, is in talks to sell its video-game division to Scopely Inc. for about $3.5 billion, according to sources. The deal could be announced in the coming weeks and may include Pokémon Go along with other mobile titles.
Scopely, known for Stumble Guys and Star Trek Fleet Command, was acquired by Saudi-owned Savvy Games Group in 2023 for $4.9 billion. If finalized, this purchase would expand Scopely’s growing mobile games portfolio.
Niantic launched Pokémon Go in 2016, pioneering location-based AR gaming. The game became a cultural phenomenon, but Niantic has struggled with recent project cancellations and layoffs. Selling its games unit would allow the company to refocus on augmented reality and geospatial technology. Niantic has been developing a Large Geospatial Model to enhance AR experiences and location-based services.
For Scopely, this acquisition would bring a blockbuster title and Niantic’s advanced AR expertise. Scopely has grown aggressively through acquisitions, including FoxNext Games and GSN Games. Under Savvy Games Group, it continues to expand its influence in the mobile gaming industry.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund owns Savvy Games Group and has been investing heavily in gaming. If this deal closes, it would align with Saudi Arabia’s goal of becoming a global gaming powerhouse.
While discussions are ongoing, there is no guarantee of a final agreement. If completed, this sale would mark one of the biggest mobile gaming deals in recent years.
